St Johns

Yesterday Room 16 went to the art room to see a lady named Olivia and she took off her work time and came to Summerland Primary. She works at St Johns.Olivia taught us how to ring the ambulance and how to wrap a bandage around a kid or teenager. We even played a game and we had to look at pictures and do actions when Olivia put up the pictures. At the end of it we got given freshly made apples.

Sizzling Science

Yesterday Natasha came in to our class. Natasha is a scientist. She teaches at highschool. She brought in pieces of metal, some coins and two liquids. The aim for the lesson was to see chemical changes. We did some predicting. We observed that the pieces of metal were dissolving in the an acid. The coins were getting cleaner in the vinegar and lemon juice. The two liquids put together made a solid. We learnt a coin is made out of copper metal. A liquid can be an acid. By Brendan

Yesterday Natasha came in to our sizzling class. Natasha has a job that is a science teacher. She works at a highschool. She brought in two liquids in some containers,  10c coins that were dirty, little pieces of copper, metal, lemon juice and vinegar. We got a container of juice or vinegar, we put the coin in and then after a while there was no dirt  on them anymore. Then we got a container of acid  and put the piece of metal in and then it just disappeared. And we put two liquids together and it turned into a solid. They were all chemical changes. By Abbey

Our visit from Dean the policeman

What policeman Dean told us
When police Dean came into our class he told us that “if a car goes one-hundred kilometres an hour and a person at the back seat has no seat belt on and the car crashes into a wall, the person at the back will fly at one-hundred kilometres until that person hit some thing”. Then he showed us some different sirens, wail, yelp, high and low. What we learnt was to always put on your set belt when you are in the the car. He also told us that if you are under 148cm you should have a booster seat.
By David Li

What we did when policeman Dean came
When  the  police  man  arrived  at  our  school  he  came  to  our  class  last .  But  at  least  he came  to  our  class  room . The  first  thing  he  told  us  was  to always wear  our  seat  belts properly . Then  he  told  us  that  we  had  to learn about road  safety. The  last  thing  he  showed  us  was  HIS  police car.  We  got  to  go  into  his  car. He  finally  showed  us  all  the  different  sirens  that  he  had  in  his  car. Then  we  did a  test  about  all  we  had learnt. But  the  bad  part  was  that  the  boys  won! The last  time  the  girls  won . I  think the  best part  was  going  in  the  police  car . The  part  that  i  loved  the most  was  the  sirens  and  they  were  the  wail, high  and  low ,yelp.  I learnt  that  everyone  in  our  class  needs  to wear a  seat  belt even  me .

What we learned when police man Dean came
Police man Dean came to Room 16. First, he showed us road safety and how to cross the  road. At the end of day he gave us a challenge to see what we have learnt. The girls won
that day and I felt happy. On the next day, he showed us car safety. He took us down to his police car! I was quite shocked. He said “always make your seatbelt click!”. We tried on the
seatbelt. I was a bit too short. The thing I liked the most was the police car, the siren and the speaker. I learnt that I was crossing the wrong way, and now I have a new way. First you step up to the curb line, then you step back one space, check both sides of the road, then you walk across looking both sides.

Hi there Room 16,
Hope your holidays have started well and you're not missing school too much! How about having a go at writing a few character descriptions while you are away. Here are some points on how to write them.
You could write one for your Mum, Dad, sister, brother, cousin, Nana, Grandad, friend or neighbour.
Bring it to school on the first day back and you can share it with the class.

Don't forget to include some similes and direct speech!

Intro - catchy opening sentence, who you are writing about
First paragraph - What the character looks like - describing words, face, hair, height, eyes, lips teeth, smile, skin
Second paragraph - The characters personality, how they treat others, direct speech
Third paragraph - The characters interests and hobbies, what they like/dislike, info about their family, favourite things to do
Fourth paragraph - what makes them special to you, a time you spent together

Measuring Madness

Room 16 have been finding out about all different types of measurement so that we can be prepared for our Masterchef Cooking Challenge.

We made fresh fruit juice using oranges, apples and lemons. We took measurements to see how much juice we managed to get out. Some fruits had lots of juice and others we had to really twist and turn to get some out.
We got to drink it at the end which we all enjoyed!

Funky Feet Day

Huia wore their funky feet to school on Friday. We also got together as a pod and made MASSIVE shoes that we collaged - gumboots, slippers, jandals and running shoes. This was to go with our pod motto - Putting Our Best Foot Forward! It was a fabulous day and the teachers were so impressed with all the values the children were showing as they worked together. Awesome effort Huia!
